imgAbout Sukuma

Conserving a five-decade coffee farming story

Sukuma Commodities Ltd is a Ugandan second-generation coffee value-chain business. Our name is rooted in a little-known village, southwest of Uganda where Our humble beginnings, started in the early 1970s with a small size coffee garden. Our founders’ passion for coffee farming earned them recognition as some of the pioneer farmers of the improved Clonal Robusta coffee in the early 1980s. A species now widely known for its high yields and premium bean size.

More About

A Single mother and staff at the Sukuma farm

I joined the Sukuma farm in 2019. I take part in harvesting coffee. Sukuma has enabled me look after my family, feed my children, pay their school fees, things that I could not do before as a single mother. I have also been able to buy a piece of land and set up my own coffee garden. This job has made my life better.

A small holder farmer in Bunyuma Village

Am so indebted to Sukuma company for the benefits that I have gotten over the years. Before they started their operations in this area, I only had under 2 acres of coffee that I could not ably take careof. Through the company credit-schemes, I got farm inputs and fertilizers that helped me revamp my garden and also increase yields by 3 times. I urge them to continue supporting us, we shall also continue supporting them.

A small holder famer in Matete village

Before Sukuma came, I could not add value to my coffee for better prices because of the transport costs to the main trading Center. It is now easy for me to process my coffee and get better prices at the Sukuma buying unit, i am also able to get back my husks which I use as mulches in my garden, I even started inter-cropping my coffee garden with bananas “ebitookye” which is another source of income, “hitting 2 birds with one stone”. The company also supports me with farm inputs that have helped me increase my garden production, I now plan to continue planting more coffee and target 70 bags of dry cherry in the coming years

A small holder farmer and farmer co-ordinator in Kyesiga sub-county

We are many farmers in this sub county that could not benefit from our coffee, because of long distances and dishonesty of local traders. However, this company helped us alleviate all our worries, they support us with farm inputs, give us good prices and pay us on time, which has greatly transformed the social-economic well-being of the surrounding villages. We appreciate the state of art machinery that they use to process our coffee with honesty and little efforts of labor. They always give us good prices which have encouraged more farmers to enhance their efforts. We thank them for also giving employment to the local community especially the many ladies and youth whose families were affected by past pandemics.
